Meet Our New CEO: Nick Bulters

Welcome, Nick! You've transitioned into the role of CEO after co-founding CATTS. Tell us about your journey in the customs and trade compliance industry.
Thank you! It's been quite a ride. I have worked on different startups and projects in customs and trade compliance before starting CATTS, now for about 15 years in total. What I like about this industry is its dynamism and room for innovation. Despite technological advances, over half of global trade processes are still relying on paper documents, which shows immense potential. My journey has been about exploring these opportunities to streamlining and enhance the trade landscape.
You and your father started this company and grew it significantly. What can you share about this experience?
The past eight years have been transformative. We began as two-person team and have grown to over 100 full-time employees, plus our partners, and contractors. You don’t only move up and you must deal with tough situations. Reflecting on this journey, I’m proud of our team’s resilience through various obstacles and our ability to maintain a solid foundation with our team.
What drives you? Do you have any hobbies or passions you'd like to share?
I’m passionate about working with people from various backgrounds and building a unified team spirit across continents is incredibly rewarding. As for hobbies, I love activities where I can immerse myself in a completely different state of mind. It can be something physically active like surfing or riding my motorcycle, or something more passive like drawing or painting.
What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?
One key piece of advice I’d share, and a crucial takeaway from my father and business partner, is the importance of collaboration. Early in my career, I learned that trying to do everything alone is not only a sure path to burnout but also less effective. Starting a company, you need tight control, but for real growth, you must rely on others. It’s impossible to replicate your own efforts, and bringing different perspectives together can lead to positive surprises and better outcomes.
Looking to the future, what aspirations do you hold for yourself and CATTS?
Peter always refers to the moon landing, achieved with technology far less powerful than the mobile phones in our pockets today and technology will just have an increasingly bigger impact on our daily lives and work. Our integration of consulting, managed services, and advanced technology positions us uniquely to address the comprehensive needs of our clients. This holistic approach ensures that we remain at the forefront, providing innovative and practical solutions.
